Firefox, you've made it!

Firefox, you've finally made it!

I have always wanted to enable firefox as my default browser but I often visit sites that require internet explorer to display and function properly. My problems have now (finally) been solved with the use of a (new?) extension called IE Tab. This little nifty extension allows you to open a URL within Firefox to run as an IE tab. That's especially useful for my internet banking which only really works with IE. I can now simply add the site to a list within the extension that I always want to have opened as an IE window. The beauty is that it's not even a simulation but it actually uses the actual IE core, similar to an SDK (I think thats the correct dev-language). I was not aware of this extension to firefox but I've now installed and configured it to work seamlessly. The beauty? I no longer need IE (except for the core).

Other useful Firefox extensions I have installed include:
  • Adblock + Adblock Filterset
  • ForecastFox
  • Download Statusbar
  • Google Toolbar
  • PDF Download
These and many more Firefox extensions can be found here.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year,

A new year has come and another one passed. All the best wishes from me to all visitors. May 2006 be more peaceful than 2005 - the world could need a break from wars and natural disasters.

Nendaz, here I come...

I'm just a few hours away from leaving work and going to the airport. Tomorrow morning I'll be on the slopes from 8am until the lifts close - I am so excited about going skiing it's not even funny. This obviously means, as I wrote in my last post, that I wont be online from 23/12- 31/12. You can email me, but be advised that I am not going to check my inbox during this time.

Merry Christmas (or happy holidays) and a Happy New Year

One more year at work

Today I finally got official word that my contract has been extended for another year. I am very grateful for this, one because my manager has put a lot of faith in me, and two, I am extremely happy with work and my fun colleagues. Contract-wise I've still got a few things to sort out surrounding $$$, but it's actually fun finally getting a grip on my career and having some goals new to strive for. Obviously I have been working in a number of jobs in association with my studies and summer internships but now it's taking shape to form something that I can build on long into the future.

I don't know if this will be my final post before I go back to my parents place in CH, but just in case: merry xmas to all the readers and people who accidentially have come across my site (welcome I guess I should say as well). I will be offline from 23-31 Dec. There's probably a place on the slopes to go online, but I think it would ruin the fun of skiing so I am determined to stay without internet access for this period. Next information highway will be downhill on the slopes in 4 Vallees.

Dating a geek - A woman's perspective

Just found this article on digg.com. The link is to a woman's personal blog describing what it means to be dating an Apple developer, but more importantly a tech-geek. It's a really funny read. Don't miss the chance to get an inside scoop.

I started pondering this while I was doing the laundry because I noticed that 9 out of the 10 t-shirts I was folding were development or Mac related. Just to give you a general idea of what I’m talking about (and the embarrassment I have to deal with when we go out in public) let me describe a few of them. First, I ran across one that read “Steve Jobs is my homeboy.” Then there was the one that said “I am blogging this.” Next was a WWDC 2004 polo and an Apple Developer Connection shirt. And my personal favorite was the one that said “Code Different.” I couldn’t make this up if I tried.

Amsterdam

Sooooo.....Finally I'm gonna get to do a bit of traveling before xmas. This coming weekend, Dec. 2-4 I'll be visiting my Brazilian buddy, Marcos, in Amsterdam. I'm really looking forward to an awesome weekend with a good ol' friend, and hangning out just like in the good ol' days. Last time I saw Marcos was this summer, and the time before that well.... we figured it was probably 4 years since we had seen each other last. This is an attempt to keep visiting each other a bit more regularly despite our busy schedules, so Amsterdam here I come......

Stephan - one for you

Stephan,

In reply to all your comments that I have spent the last ½ hour deleting, I just wanted to help you on your way with a little comment for the future:

"It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt" - Abraham Lincoln.

I invite your constructive comment.

New Idea: This one is fool proof

Here comes another great idea (at least I think so). For this idea privacy issues are another dimension. This is just the idea generation mill.....

SO,
At work we use instant messaging for those quick talks with people far away from our own desks or in other buildings. It's proven very valuable, but I've found that people "forget" to change their status to "I'm away" when they go to meetings or have other things to do. This can become quite annoying when I actually do get up to go talk to someone. When someone is "online" I assume they are at their desk working, but on occasion I see empty seats. How do you solve this little issue? Build in small sensors like those in Volvo cars that can "feel" when someone is actually sitting in the seat. We have yet to see lawsuits against organizations because they didn't provide seat belts for their workers who "happen to fall off their chair" so that's not what this idea is about. It's purely aimed at automatically changing your IM status so that people know if you are at your desk or not. It can save a lot of time since people like myself wouldn't need to get up in the first place.

Google Analytics

So I havent been posting lately. Luckily for me, there is a pretty easy explanation for that: I've been busy with work. I'm at work right now but since I'm seconds away from going to lunch, I figured I'd make a little post to let you know I'm still alive.

I've just installed Google Analytics on my homepage to track how my site is doing. YES you are being tracked but name one website that doesn't do this? I have previously been using StatCounter, which I can only recommend, but unfortunately my impression of the new service offering by Google is just more sophisticated and still the same price: FREE

Bike lights

A few days ago my bike was stolen from the main trainstation in Copenhagen. I left in there in the morning after having been to the doctor and when I came back in the evening it was gone. I looked around for a bit, but my bike was nowhere to be found. So yesterday my cousin's husband (can you say cousin-in-law?) lent me his old bike. This brought about an interesting problem: bike lights.

If somebody out there working with bikelights is reading this you should develop a standard for bike light holders. A simple thing like bike lights really shouldn't be a problem, but apparently it is. My bike lights didnt fit his, and I dont know how many different bike lights there are out there but i know there's gotta be more than 100. So if someone ever loses their bike or bike lights they have to not only buy new lights but also the fittings. What's up with that. Can we get an ISO standard please!
